My "Seen" Database As Of March 2022

 A project I've been working on is making a spreadsheet of all music acts/performers I've seen over the years.  In this blog I've been documenting music acts I've seen since 2009, but even with those acts, I've forgotten some of the musicians.  And of course my memory of acts I saw before 2009 is full of holes.

But I've done the best I could, looking up some things on the web as I've gone along.  I have tried to only include performers that I *remembered* being with an act, but I've also included performers who were extremely likely to have appeared with a band on that date.  For instance, I don't remember particular Beach Boys I saw when I saw the band in 1975, but it's a matter of record who the primary performers were with that band at that time.

I've also struggled with dates for acts before 2009.  For instance, I don't remember exactly when I saw the Beach Boys in the mid-70s, but I remember where I saw them and it's a matter of record when they played the Boston Music Hall in that time period, so I was able to deduce the date.  Other dates are guesses.  I don't remember when I saw Del McCoury in 1997 in Lexington MA, but I've guessed a month (April in this case) ... sometimes pretty accurately ... and have listed "0" as the day of the month.

I finally finished the project of backfilling this to the first music act I remember seeing, J. Geils Band in Summer 1971.  I recall seeing 892 acts in all, a few on the same date at music festivals but on different stages.  I've since uploaded the spreadsheet into a local version of SQL Server, which enables me to make some interesting analyses.  For instance, here are the performers I've seen at least 5 times, with the earliest and latest dates I've seen them:

And here's a table of the bands I've seen at least 3 times.  Note that with some of these I've specified "band" after the name.  For instance, I've seen Emmylou Harris solo and also headlining several bands (The Hot Band, The Nash Ramblers) and have rolled up all of those under just "Emmylou Harris."  Alternately I've seen Eilen Jewell as part of the Sacred Shakers but here have only rolled up the times I've seen her with her dedicated band, as she's not the headliner with the Sacred Shakers (debatably).
